KeKe Yang

An exhibition curated by Billy Chen that traces the tender seams between people and place, where a pause in the grass or a glance across a field becomes its own quiet form of communion.

/about

Fleeing from the First Autumn Sweep is an exhibition curated by Billy Chen showcasing the photographic series created by conceptual artist KeKe Yang. From the backroads and landscapes surrounding Arts Letters & Numbers (ALN) during the summer months, KeKe worked closely with young people, visiting artists, and members of the ALN community; the project captures moments of tenderness and vulnerability held within the serenity of nature. Quiet gestures, shared glances, and unguarded pauses reveal relationships built through trust and collaboration, connections that feel increasingly rare in the accelerating pace of contemporary life.

At the heart of this series is a practice grounded in presence, collaboration, and mutual care. Each image emerges from a shared attentiveness, a co-created space in which the boundaries between photographer and subject soften. The natural surroundings of fields, riverbanks, and wooded paths act not merely as a backdrop but as a partner in shaping how bodies relate and rest together.

This body of work is not only a portrait of individuals, but of a community of artists from various disciplines learning how to hold space for one another. The work invites viewers to slow down, breathe, and rediscover an inner stillness that resists the pressures of urban life. In offering these quiet connections, the series becomes a meditation on refuge, belonging, and the fragile beauty of human presence within the landscape.

Yang earned a BA in Photomedia from the University of Washington and an MFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design in New York. As a conceptual artist, her work profoundly explores the fluidity of existence, challenging the boundaries of materiality and perception. Drawing inspiration from cultural experiences and the fluid dynamics of gender identity, Yang manifests these concepts through photography, video, installations, and performance.

Yang’s work has been showcased in several exhibitions, including the group exhibition at Absent Gallery, China (2024); 4C Gallery, Los Angeles (2024); MC Gallery, Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York (2023); and the UW Photomedia Art Show, Seattle (2021, 2022).
