/about

The title, From Barn to the Woods, evokes both a physical and metaphorical journey. From the intimate space of the barn, where experimentation takes root, to the open woods, where ideas branch out and intertwine. Within this dynamic framework, artists move fluidly between painting, sculpture, textile, writing, sound, and performance, transforming process into conversation and material into memory.

The exhibition features works that exemplify the rich intersections between disciplines. Noticeably, Ann Flemings’ red canvas, once the result of a class prompt, unfolds into an exploration of touch, gesture, and persistence. Jasmin Risk’s textile-based works reflect on healing and repair through processes of destruction and reassembly, redefining what it means to be whole. Thanat Singhirunnusorn draws unexpected parallels between Thai royal imagery and the aesthetics of sports culture, bridging heritage and contemporary visual codes. Meanwhile, Weenta Girmay presents Altar Refuge, a collaborative installation inviting introspection through mirrored fragments and organic materials, transforming the gallery into a contemplative space of gathering and renewal.

At its heart, From Barn to the Woods reflects the ethos of Arts Letters & Numbers, a community where learning, experimentation, and interdisciplinary dialogue intertwine. The exhibition is less a conclusion than an unfolding process: a living conversation between artists, materials, and viewers that celebrates transformation, curiosity, and the act of making itself.

  • Mira. J is a graphic designer from Singapore. Her work was born from the creative currents of the Arts Letters & Numbers workshops, this piece traces a journey, from the lines of David Gersten’s Drawing 101, morphing into the inquiries of Sina Gourdarzi’s Probing the Dot, and settling into new forms through the sculptural language of Nils Anderson’s Sculpture 101.

  • Ann Flemings is a painter currently residing in Austin, TX. Her work was created in Painting 101, this piece began with a prompt: manipulate a red canvas in five distinct ways. “I folded, punched, painted, cut, glued, wove, pierced and hung—letting the process lead the way. My creative practice is rooted in making. I rarely start with a fixed idea; instead, I respond to what unfolds on the surface—letting each decision inform the next and I discover the work as I go. The bold cadmium red ground instantly drew me in. It reminded me of kusama’s dots—and a small ladybug that visited my room in Twins south. Said to bring good luck, she inspired the title. I love the contrast in textures: rough hemp rope against shimmering crystal drops. Together, they add movement, dimension, and a bit of magic.

  • Jasmin Risk is an interdisciplinary artist whose work uses discarded textiles to examine healing and repair. They champion fragmentation, allowing for imperfections, and stake out territory in less definable, in-between spaces to embody their queer, non-binary, autistic identities. Their art practice incorporates textiles, performance, writing, video, book-making, and materials-based research. Within textiles, they use knitting, needle felting, wet felting, and paper-making, alongside destructive mark making techniques implementing cheese graters, blades, and ripping by hand. By embedding fragments in textiles, paper, books and installation, Risk reconsiders what constitutes “wholeness.

  • Bella Blumenschein is an interdisciplinary visual artist and creative writer. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, she is currently based in Brooklyn while pursuing her MA at the New School for Social Research, where she explores the tensions and intersections between Eastern Philosophies, Phenomenology, and Psychoanalysis.

Drops of shades of green and blue and red are blended in the rectangular wood surface through brush tapping that is coordinated to the rhythms of the music in the space.

  • Thanat Singhirunnusorn is a sculptor and painter born in Bangkok, Thailand and raised in Huntsville Alabama. The work selected is a part of a series from my show “19: Hot, Cold, Heavy, Light" which is a culmination of all the ideas and perspectives I've learned throughout my five weeks here at ALN. This show explores the similarities and differences of royalty between high and low culture. Offering an unusual pairing of sports culture and Thai culture through different styles of art. These works reflect both my love for sports and the connection I have with my Thai heritage.”

  • Weenta Girmay is an independent documentary producer, installation artist and DJ. Her past work has been supported by the Tribeca Film Institute, screened at the New Orleans Film Festival, and Camden International Film Festival. Weenta is based in Orleans, LA where she has lived since 2015. She is an Eritrean-American, originally from the Washington D.C. area. In her spare time she loves to grow flowers.  "Altar Refuge" is a site specific collaboration between Weenta Girmay and Tiamat. It is a space for introspection, meditation and intentional gathering. Mirrored fragments and tree weavings are used throughout to draw attention to the inner spirit and the true self.”

  • Ruonan Yan is an artist who finds inspiration in exploring various creative mediums, each offering a unique perspective on the world. Photography has been a lifelong passion for her, a way to capture fleeting moments that resonate beyond the surface. Although she began focusing intensively on photography during the pandemic, it has become a central part of her artistic expression, particularly in street photography, where the spontaneous beauty of everyday life unfolds.

  • Manwei He is a New York-based artist whose journey spans both fine art and, more recently, tattooing. Since shifting her focus to tattooing, she’s brought her extensive artistic background to the new medium. Her work is deeply influenced by classical art and driven by a dedication to precision. Now, she merges tradition with modern expression, creating tattoos that are both timeless and personal.
