Come Make with Us

August, 2019

Averill Park, NY, United States

In the shape of a festival - Come Make with Us, as the title hints, was an invitation to the community to experience and participate in the many works created during 'Summer at ALN'. Through multiple forms and medias, the works created a platform for interactions between the audience, the artists, the spaces and the continuous unfolding of the questions.

One of the hopes of the summer was to create space and time for people to really immerse in their works. The creative intensity that people brought to their works was incredible, the studios were bubbling with works and conversations between residents, thesis participants, fellows, visiting artists and community members. Over the four weeks, the questions and projects grew in depth - and it became clear that the festival had to reflect this.

The festival kicked off, in the studio space, with an incredibly powerful concert by the musicians in residents. This was the first concert held in this space and performed on the recently donated Steinway baby grand. Composer/pianist Michael Harrison, cellist Ashley Bathgate and violinist Victoria Putterman performed music by Harrison, Philip Glass and Andrew Norman; Payton MacDonald performed two original works for solo marimba.

Saturday was a daylong engaging invitation to experience works created by the artists. The day was woven with many elements: constructions, conversations, performances, explorations, dinner preparation, dinner, listening critique, creations of works, bonfire and dancing. People from five continents brought their unique voices and approaches to the invitation: Come Make with Us.
