Everything and Beyond - Terry Riley & Sara Miyamoto

August 26th, 2022

Online Concert Live from Japan

As a living legend, Terry Riley’s career as composer / performer has spanned over 6 decades starting in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 50’s up to the present time in Japan.

Raised in California, Terry Riley began studying composition and performing solo piano in the 1950s. He befriended and collaborated with composer La Monte Young, and later became involved with the San Francisco Tape Music Center. In the 1970s, he began intensive studies under Hindustani singer Pandit Pran Nath.

Influenced by jazz and Indian classical music, his music became notable for its innovative use of repetition, tape music techniques, and delay systems. He has written in many classical ensemble formats, solo guitar, guitar duo, solo piano, piano 4-hands, piano quintet, piano, violin and percussion, sting trio, string quartet, cello octet, saxophone quartet, string quartet and synthesizer, sax quartet and synthesizer, a cappella mixed choir, brass instruments and percussion and a wind/string sextet to name a few.

Best known as a pioneer of the minimalist school of composition, Terry Riley’s work ‘In C’ and ‘A Rainbow in Curved Air’, both considered landmarks of minimalism and important influences on experimental music, rock, and contemporary electronic music.

On Friday August 26th, 2022, Terry Riley and Sara Miyamoto offered an online zoom live concert from Japan. The concert was free and open to all thanks to Terry Riley's graciously offering!
